I know that July-August consider to be the wet season. Does this mean that all beaches in Phuket and Krabi area are less suitable for swimming than in the dry season (due to high waves) ? From your experience, is there any difference in weather (rainfall) between July and August ?

July and August can be quite wet but typically afternoon storms, heavy but short.
You will still find sheltered bays on the lee side of islands which are suitable for swimming. Off shore longtail boat rides should be booked with some degree of caution.
