Fee to visit Maya bay??!!

Is there really a fee to visit Maya bay or did my longtail driver try to rip me off? Had a big argument with him and didn%26#39;t end up going there. He insisted there were police on the beach collecting fees.

Have to say that visiting Phi Phi and surrounds was one of the most soul destroying experiences of my life. The majority of locals there seemed so aggressive and manipulative when it came to money and by and large seemed a depressed lot.

It%26#39;s such a shame because I can imagine how the place could have been before the tsunami.

Fyi. If you meet a longtail driver named ';Mon'; don%26#39;t use him. Very unhelpful and unfriendly. He spent the whole trip tinkering with his boat while smoking pot.

Fee to visit Maya bay??!!

Oh Dear !!!

Maya Bay has National Park status so there is a small fee to pay....though often, it is not collected.

You went all the way to Phi Phi and didn%26#39;t visit Maya Bay because of a small fee?

Oh Dear !!!

Fee to visit Maya bay??!!

Quite a few of the islands have national park status and the fee is normally incorporated in the tour.

Koh Rok Nok from Koh Lanta is one example. Our trip to Maya Bay was gorgeous and possibly a feew was included in our day tour price. Certainl;y yhere were no collectors on the beach.

We have some pics, maps and stories of our trip here... www.bobandjanette.com which may prove useful.

Happy %26amp; safe travels

Hi,

We visited Maya Bay twice in Jan 09, once in the morning by longtail boat %26amp; again in the evening by speedboat %26amp; was never asked to pay a fee.

I have read that there is a fee to pay as it is a national park but I never noticed any ';police'; on the beach collecting money or anywhere to pay it so they mustn%26#39;t be very strict about it.

Sounds like you were very unlucky with your choice of longtail driver. Its a shame that you didn%26#39;t get to visit Maya Bay as it is a must-see especially if you have seen the movie The Beach.

Maybe next time?

Yeah I was quite annoyed with the longtail driver. The problem was that I knew it was going to cost us 1200 Baht so the only thing I took out with me to Ko Phi Phi Le was 1200 Baht in a ziplock bag tied to the inside of my boardshorts.

It was very frustrating the way he cut the motor a few hundred meters from the beach and demanded more money from us saying that we should have been paying 1300 Baht anyway because we had the use of flippers.

Unfortunately there will never be a next time as the whole experience of the South has been an extremely stressful one for both me and my wife.

I%26#39;m not down about it though. There are too many great places in this world to visit.

I have been to Maya bay twice and paid 50 baht on both trips, same when we went to Mosquito Island, on all trips the money was paid to the driver of the long tail or the tour guide who then passed it onto the ranger, its a shame that they didn%26#39;t advise you before you headed out.

We just got back from Phi Phi. We noticed a huge price difference with the longtail boats. From Bart 600 to Bart 1500 for 4 hours for 4 people to Maya bay.

And YES there is a visiting fee of Bart 200 per person to be paid to the police. They have a little desk set up at Maya Bay. We witnessed our driver handing over the money to them. Have the funny feel the boat drivers get some kind of commission out of this!!!
