rawai

Ive been looking through past topics re Rawai beach and the seafood bbq%26#39;s where you sit on mats on the beach.

Are these places still there does anyone know? The posts are quite dated and i cant find any recent ones.

The idea is to get a taxi from where we are staying in Kata to Rawai one evening for a few drinks and some nice seafood!

Many thanks

Sara

rawai

Hi saramad - we went about 18 months ago and did exactly that.

The restaurants are on the other side of the road to the beach - but you just order your prawns and stciky rice and go sit on the beach!

Theybring the beers and food across to you!!

BTW - i feel it should be compulsory if you do eat on Rawai that you have to order BBQ prawn and stick rice, perhaps we could implement some sort of jail term .... :))

Do it - Rawai rocks - especially around dusk - watching the light fade with the longtail boats all moored.

Absolute gold.

rawai

AS time goes on, they keep building more of the concrete wall blocking the view of the water and taking away the beach.

Now, you have to go about half-way down the beach before you get to the end of the wall. From there, westward there are still a few places left where you can sit on the mats on the ground or sand rather than at a concrete table with your view of the beachfront blocked. (the new way)

Don%26#39;t know why they think this is better but obviously they are putting some money into it to change it in this way.

The food is still good though.

Enjoy

The wall certainly has spoilt the character of Rawai.

Another 5 minutes away at Nai Harn beach there are several Thai restaurants just behind the beach chairs which are good value.

In front of the car park heading towards the beach there are several stall selling fresh fruit, fried chicken, drinks %26amp; to the right of these stalls there are several shops.

Just another suggestion if you are not happy with Rawai for dinner. CJ

mnay thnaks for your replies - hmm, dont know now, it sounds like it is nothing like the pictures i have seen which are 2 years old now anyway! it looked so nice and seemed like a lovely thing to do one evening, maybe not anymore!

I first went to Rawai many, many years back and stayed at a resort which is now the Evason Resort and Six Senses Spa Hotel. We loved it then and I have often thought of going back, after reading the posts re your question I am having second thoughts.

Pratunam Budget Hotel

Hi. What is important in a hotel for me is price, location (Pratunam Wholesale Market) %26amp; cleanliness. Which is better among the ff list?

-Bangkok City Inn

-Best Bangkok House

-First House Hotel

-Khurana Inn

-Citin Pratunam Hotel

-First Hotel

Thanks.

Pratunam Budget Hotel

Hi,

U can stay at Baiyoke Boutique, it%26#39;s quite new %26amp; cheap also.

Regards

Doris

Pratunam Budget Hotel

Hi, I%26#39;m just in the Citin and it is lovely. Very fair value for price. Excellent accomodation and quite new and perfectly clean.

I stay in Pratunam every time we go to bangkok due to our business and so far the best places there which we like are Citin hotel(near Bayoke) and PJ Watergate(across the road from Indra Regent).

Thanks for the reply guys.

You can also try this new hotel, here%26#39;s my review:

tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g293916-d123鈥?/a>

http://www.p2hotel.com/index-5.html

I pay about S$60 per nite with Continental Breakfast served. I booked via wotif.com.sg

Cheers

i know Citin Pratunam. but many taxi drivers don%26#39;t. you should tell them to go to Baiyoke Sky (tallest hotel in Bangkok). Citin is just next door.

Bangkok City Inn is a old hotel. but close to the BTS Chitlom, which means you can walk to Centralworld using the BTS sheltered linkway that takes you to Centralworld.

personally, i have stayed at P2 Boutique Hotel twice. it is a nice hotel at Petchburi Road Soi 33. next to Pratunam City Inn.

the prices are a bit more than Pratunam City Inn and i should say it is slightly above average pricing for a 3-star hotel. but the rooms are very nice and worth every Baht that you are paying. the service is also good, since it is a small and personal hotel with staff who remember your name and your needs.

only trouble is, if you intend to bring friends to stay over night with you, you should book the room and register 2 names (yourself and your friend%26#39;s name). otherwise, prepare to pay an additional 500B for the extra person. something i cannot comprehend.

if i book a room. it really doesn%26#39;t matter if i have 10people in it or not. i paid for it. and if i%26#39;m comfortable having 10people share the small space, then it is my choice.

but the hotel is safe and well guarded by attentive security guards.

i came back from a night-out in town at 4.30am and the guard was still awake to welcome me with a big smile. despite it being an insane hour for a tourist to be up and awake.

Pratunam Wholesale Market is a really good place to shop. things are cheap and i%26#39;m sure you will hit your baggage capacity with very little ease.

happy travels!!

i have stayed at citin. p2 boutique should score better than citin anytime.

i totally agree with P2 scoring higher than Citin.

perhaps that%26#39;s why many travel agents in Singapore don%26#39;t have Citin in their list of hotels.

i%26#39;m not pushing P2. but i%26#39;m only saying it cos that%26#39;s the hotel i favour when i%26#39;m in Bangkok.

i also hear Nasa Vegas is also a good hotel. my friend stayed there and he recommends that hotel.

Manhora Hotel (Suriwongse) is also very convenient to get to Silom, Chinatown, Patpong. but it%26#39;s a old hotel.

so many hotels to choose from. just take a stab. if it%26#39;s good, continue going there on your next trip. if it%26#39;s not good, then go to another one. at least you would have already been there already.

no use speculating on the net about the quality cos you will always be swayed and hence lose your own opinions. flow with gut instinct.

I suggest First House Hotel is within reached of pratunam center %26amp; platinum mall.

The location is great for people who are in Bangkok for shopping. The room was nice and big and comfortable.

Kamala or Karon.

Hi everyone. 4 of us (2 couples) in our 50%26#39;s are travelling to Phuket in October for our 1st visit. Travel agent has recommended the Aquamarine resort in Kamala. It looks great but seems that it could be a little out of the way ';15 min walk'; from beach (%26amp; it;s downhill) Has anyone stayed here? What%26#39;s it like %26amp; how far from restaurants etc ? Is it too quite (we may be 50%26#39;s but not yet ready for retirement village)

The other area agen suggested was Karon. What is the better area ? Have heard that Patong would be too busy noisy etc.Hotel in Karon was recommended as Cape Sienna.

Once again, any info. gratefully received.

Stroudie.

Kamala or Karon.

Aquamarine in Kamala has luxury accommodation but my own opinion more suited for your couples who are happy to be in very quiet place, it is what i term hillside location, that means a good 15 mintes walk, 5 minutes by car.

So i really don%26#39;t know why the travel agent would suggest unless you wanted a romantic hideaway !

There is no beach there, you have to go into kamala, which means you have to carry all your beach stuff with you.

Are there 2 Cape Sienna%26#39;s ? The only one I know of is in Kamala, another headland hillside, great views, but you have the same location thing.

Now if you wanted kamala you might as well be on the beach, although not top luxury or anything right on the beachfront area is Kamala Beach Hotel.

Kamala is quiet and it means a taxi to/from Patong, there are some good restaurants around Kamala but I think Kata or Karon would suit you better.

The Karon beach resort at far south is on the beach, far north end again hillside with views but relatively negotiable walkway down to be is Ccentara villas. Other wise across the beach road, there are luxury and also mid range.

Kata is very nice, the Kata beach resort is right on the beach near Club Med, there are restaurants, some shopping and easy going bars in the area. If not right on the beach there are somne good 4 star bargains like Centara Kara Resort

You are saying October, that is still within the low season and prices are cheap because of that, rates go up from November when the weathe rimproves for the high season, so there are lots of bargains. deluxe about AU$ 104, Suite AU$ 194 as a price guide, they do a stay 10 nights but pay for 5 nights or stay 12 nights just pay 6 nights deal in october, little catch, on those free nights you have to pay compulsory breakfast about AU$24 each, know that sounds high, it is, so think of it that you pay say $104 for the first 6 nights and then AU$48 for the next 6 nights and that is some %26#39;real bargain%26#39; for a 4 star, again, not on the beach but walkable easy.

Kata beach resort absolute beachfront about AU$150-190 for 2 a night.

if you like boutique style with good cuisine try Mom tri%26#39;s Boathouse or villa royale, you will get plenty of ideas about those here, good if you want more boutique style as opposed to resort style.

Le Meridien is in it%26#39;s own cove a few km south of Patong, great location but you can%26#39;t rally walk anywhere from there. kata does have the benefit of wandering outside your hotel/resort to restaurants etc.

Patong in october won%26#39;t be that busy, you have some nice places that are close to shopping, restaurants etc without being right in the center,Amari at the very far south end ( transport needed unless a very long walk ), Gracelands is just north of the busy area, walking idtance. Club Andaman very good for age group, well established resort hotel, not right in the busy area but walking distance. AU$ 94-114, 114 gives you balcony deluxe room ( best room grade ), good 4 star range. In october with weather if you do like to go out most evenings then patong should not be off your lists, perhaps better than being in a quieter area if you did like to go out a lot, also is by far the best for shopping !

Kamala or Karon.

The wife and I are in our LATE 50%26#39;s and have been to Phuket 4 times and stayed in Kamala, Patong, Karon and Kata. We did not stay at the Aquamarine, but we did stay in that area and it was the least favorite because of the locaton. Kata is very quiet and for the most part the beach is blocked off by Club Med. Patong is busy and has many restaurants and shopping oportunities. We are in the midle of planning our next trip and we will most likely stay at the Centra Karon Resort. we have not stayed there before but have read many good reviews and we like the location. It is close to many good restaurants, massage shops, shopping and about 5-7 minutes walk to the beach wen we want to go. To be honest if we are going to lay out we prefer to do it around a nice pool with drink service. Have a look and it may be what you are looking for.

Thank you for your advice %26amp; help.We have now decided that Patong might be the area that is best suited. I will start looking at the resorts/hotels you have suggested. There are so many great looking places to choose from. Decisions, decisions.

Thanks again,

Stroudie.

Any experiences with Aspery Hotel in Phuket?

    Hello,

Is somebody was there and can share exp? This hotel is on my list of potential stays on my trip. But I haven%26#39;t found anything about this place...

Any experiences with Aspery Hotel in Phuket?

I give this thread about one hour.

Any experiences with Aspery Hotel in Phuket?

Replying to a 4 month old post! One way to drum up business I suppose. I would imagine it%26#39;s pretty noisy staying in the Aspery as there%26#39;s still lots of construction going on near it. Mind you there is all over Patong.

Assuming, that I needed this info 4 months ago, it%26#39;s quite slow response :)

I%26#39;ve decided to stay somewhere else (Phuttassa Residence) and it was rather convenient location despite all noises from main streets of Phuket. For 2 nights it was right choice.

I visited Koh Samui last February and encountered lots of freak rain, but since Feb is supposed to be the best time to go I gave it a another chance this year. However it was a journey of firsts, first time using Thai Air, I normally fly Singapore Air, and first time visiting Bangkok which I%26#39;ll come to later.

Sat in the Departure Lounge of Heathrow Airport in London, I did my usual quick scan of how many potential screaming toddlers would be on the flight, and discovered none at all, just an eclectic mix young couples and a few incredibly old western men with much younger Thai women accompanying them. As I gazed through the glass windows at the runway, wondering what to expect from Thai Air, I glimpsed a Singapore Air A380 taking off and stared at it wistfully, wishing I was on board. The Thai Air flight was about £300 cheaper though and because they%26#39;re in Star Alliance I still get my frequent flyer miles. I%26#39;d done my research beforehand and the only downside I could see was the plane, a 747-400, with no entertainment on demand. So armed with books, magazines, an MP3, a Sony PSP (with games and movies), a pack of playing cards and a colouring book I boarded the flight prepared to entertain myself.

When I got on board, and noticed the 2-4-2 seat configuration and seat back TVs, I realised that we were instead onboard an A340-600, one of the new aircraft. Large touch screen TVs, entertainment on demand, woo hoo! Settled down for the inflight service, no amenity pack but some ear bud headphones to keep, then an excellent Thai green curry was served to get you in the holiday mood. Noticed a steward wandering down towards first class with a bottle of cognac and a tray of glasses and thought to myself ';How the other half live';, then he started walking up the aisle of economy dishing out some rather generous measures of the stuff to us cattle-class plebs. Service was pretty much on par with Singapore Air I thought, very impressed and particularly liked the leg room and seat configuration.

The flight was rather smooth until descending into Bangkok, the sky went black and there was a spectacular electrical storm. I looked out of the window and there was a flash of lightning, and I momentarily spied a disgusting wide-eyed hairy gremlin ripping out the wiring from the fuselage. Then I realised it was just my reflection in the window as I tried to untangle the wires of my noise-reduction headphones. Incidentally, if you%26#39;re a long haul flyer, these are a worthwhile investment; they don%26#39;t block out all the sound but just reduce that annoying background droning. Must remember to take these to my next visit to the in-laws.

Landed with no problems in Bangkok and quickly transferred to my onward flight to Koh Samui which took about 45 mins. Despite being fed twice on the long haul flight, I was presented with a rather excellent chicken pie on this short flight. If it had mash and gravy it would have been perfect.

Arrived at Samui airport to clear blue skies and disembarked to the sweet little Samui airport, probably the cutest airport in the world with it%26#39;s low-rise series of open air pavillions with thatched roofs. After collecting luggage, we were intercepted by a kindly Thai woman asking if we wanted transport and pointed us to the airport limo counter. As we%26#39;d not prearranged any transport, this sounded like a good idea; cost to Mae Nam via airport limo was 600THB, or 150THB using the airport shuttle service. Opted for the latter and didn%26#39;t regret it, 20 mins later we were in the grounds of the Hutcha Beach Resort in Mae Nam.

Mae Nam is a reasonably quiet resort, about 7km of beach, with a calm albeit slightly murky sea. A few hotels on the beach, and beachfront restaurants, and then shops, massage shops, restaurants, and tour offices on the back streets. Everything is very spread out, although there was plenty around the hotel. Hutcha Resort consists of a number of little concrete huts with outdoor bathrooms, nicely manicured gardens, large pool, and restaurant. It%26#39;s not beachfront, but about 20 metres from the beach, and you can see the sea from parts of the restaurant. After the long haul flight, crashed out at the pool, listening to the birds tweeting, the sun beating down after a long cold winter in the UK, the muscles started to relax, a smile creeping onto my face. This was then all shattered by a party of 4 French guests at the hotel, who entered the pool area talking very loudly. Unfortunately, I think one of them, a big burly middle-aged fellow, had Tourettes syndrome, as every few minutes he just randomly shouted what I recognised as some particularly colourful French swear words. He also insisted on spitting and blowing bubbles in the pool, which made him sound like Daffy Duck. Didn%26#39;t cause any trouble though. It was so hot I had to take a dip in the pool and when I came out and rubbed all the French saliva off me with my pool towel, a middle aged English lady approached us and introduced herself and we started talking about restaurants in Mae Nam. Very pleasant, although she weighed about 300lbs and insisted on wearing a micro-bikini and g-string which was somewhat distracting - I kept thinking of a strung joint of pork I%26#39;d bought from the butchers the week before. Anyway I digress, upon this lady%26#39;s gushing recommendation I decided to try a Thai massage at the little massage hut at the side of the pool. Although I%26#39;ve had Thai foot massage before which I%26#39;ve generally enjoyed, I%26#39;ve never had a full Thai massage, so decided to give it a go. Well, I wasn%26#39;t too impressed really, it just seemed to be an hour of prodding and stretching, I do better stretching exercises at the gym before a workout. She seemed somewhat disappointed that she couldn%26#39;t crack any of my toes, and also perturbed that the extreme stretching didn%26#39;t bother me at all (I am double-jointed, wonder if this affected it?). Anyway, that%26#39;s probably the first and last full Thai massage I%26#39;ll have, I%26#39;ll stick with the Balinese massages. Breakfast in the hotel was pleasant, there was a Japanese couple who arrived and always took photos of their food before eating. Then you could hear the French guests arriving with the shouts of ';Merde!'; echoing around the restaurant. They fed the hotel dog some croissant every morning; I had visions of the dog turning up wearing a beret and riding a bike one morning, but they didn%26#39;t manage to convert it. There were some nice bars and restaurants in Mae Nam, I particularly liked the Soul Sound bar, which was just like a converted garage in a back street. Some nice music, great cocktails and a nice vibe in there, not particularly busy though. I was in there one night, and noticed a man walking past the bar. The reason I noticed him is he wore one red converse high-top on one foot, and a green one on the other foot. He peered into the darkness of the bar as if looking for something....or someone. Five mins later, he walked past again, peering in. Then again. Then again. This happened every 5 mins over the course of an hour and was very odd indeed; we mused that he was a vampire, waiting to be invited in. Eventually he stopped at the entrance to the bar, and asked the bartender if Grandmother and Grandfather rocks were near (these being genital shaped rocks). These rocks are on the east coast and Mae Nam is on the north coast so he was way off. I saw this as just an excuse for him to check out his prey in the bar, so we high-tailed it out of there, clutching our crucifixes. We always seem to find an expat bar without really looking, so stumbled into the Lazy Coconut which was very nice, great service, and a selection of Fish n Chips and pies if you%26#39;re missing a taste of home. There were a couple of bars where there was one pretty Thai waitress for each western man, one of these bars also offering a massage service which seemed like a strange mix to me. I actually got shouted at as I walked past this place, I didn%26#39;t catch it all other than the words ';sexy a*s';. I should have really stopped and gone back to ask her to repeat her compliment. For restaurants, I liked Cupid, where I had an incredibly spicy fish in chilli sauce. Having spend weeks of preparation eating spicier and spicier foods to increase my chilli tolerance, when the waiter asked, ';Do you want it medium or spicy?';, I enthusiastically grinned and nodded like an idiot and said ';Spicy';. A look of sympathy crossed the waiter%26#39;s face and he disappeared muttering to himself. Shortly after his wife proudly presented a nice bit of fish drenched in a red chilli sauce. The first few mouthfuls were fine and delicious then the heat hit. At the end of the meal, I was eating with my mouth open to let the fresh air in, and couldn%26#39;t speak, only writing the words ';Help me'; in the frosting on the side of my glass of Singha. The following morning, my stomach was churning and I had the chilli sweats, I can now understand why outdoor bathrooms in Asia are so popular. Also ate in the Food Stop restaurant, which was excellent, and the You and Me restaurant which was outstanding, even at 9:30pm when everywhere else was shut, this place was still busy. I observed the Japanese couple from my hotel in there, taking photos of their meal before tucking in. I wondered if they just had a photo album full of pictures of food, should have asked them really. No different to my photo album full of photos of various beaches around the world I guess. During the day, the Seaview restaurant was nice, beachfront and with excellent coconut milkshakes. It was here I decide to try out my Thai language skills - I%26#39;d spent the previous couple of months practicing some basic phrases to try to get the tones right. I%26#39;d read that to try to speak the language brings you a little respect and shows that you%26#39;re willing to make an effort, so I confidently asked for a glass of red wine in what I thought was perfect Thai. For some reason this brought about much hilarity from the waitress, who couldn%26#39;t stop laughing at me. I wondered if I%26#39;d got the tone wrong and instead asked her if I could have a bottle of donkeys or something. Got my glass of wine without any problem, but I%26#39;m still curious as to the hilarity.

After a few days chilling out in Maenam, got a taxi for 200THB to Bophut. A word about taxis. They all have meters, they all say ';Meter Taxi'; on the roof of the car, but trying to get them to turn the meter on is like trying to lick your elbow (I bet some of you are now trying this). So you have to haggle a price before the start of every taxi journey - very tiresome. I know why lots of foreigners now hire scooters. Only a 10 minute journey to Bophut, during which the taxi driver cheerfully told us that David and Victoria Beckham had purchased a house on Samui the previous year. Why is it that when you tell someone you%26#39;re from England, they started to talk about football and Manchester United and the Beckhams? We were staying at the Lodge in Bophut but the taxi driver didn%26#39;t know where it was so we had to direct him, fortunately we knew where it was from last year%26#39;s visit.

Bophut is a traditional little village on the north coast, still retaining Thai/Chinese shop houses that have been converted into restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. Bophut is quite compact, you can walk around the whole place in about 10 minutes, unlike Mae Nam which was a bit more sprawling. It%26#39;s a little more classy than Mae Nam, more western owned bars and restaurants with higher prices to reflect this. More shops too, including some funky little boutiques. The Lodge is a charming little property on the beachfront, only about 10 rooms all sea-facing with balconies. Upon entering the Lodge, there was no-one around, but there was a little bell on the counter,so I rang it loudly and waited for the sound of footsteps, but nothing. Then a mysterious figure in black silently glided down the stairs, and said ';Welcome';. This was Koi, the charming manager who despite my protestations, immediately picked up our heavy bags with almost superhuman strength and scurried upstairs with them to our room. The beach in Bophut isn%26#39;t great, the sand is very chunky, it%26#39;s like walking on lumps of raw cane sugar, and the sea is a little murky. However, the clouds then decided to rumble in, and the tropical showers hit with a vengeance. So, decided to get a taxi to Chaweng to have a wander around the shops there, taxi was 300THB. Arrived in Chaweng around 11am and practically everywhere was closed, apart from Starbucks and various chemist shops, so just planted ourselves in Starbucks and watched the street outside steadily turn into a shallow river. About midday places started to open, so just had a wander around, looking at the various fake t-shirts and shorts on display, which seemed nearly identical whichever shop you visited. A quick lunch at Tropical Murphys (an Irish pub), then a taxi back to Bophut. ';Where are you from?'; the taxi driver asked and I replied ';England';. He nodded and said ';Ah, you from Manchester? You like Manchester United? David Beckham?';. I sighed and nodded wearily.

While we had cloudy and rainy weather, decided to head to Big Buddha beach to see the Big Buddha. Yep, there%26#39;s a Buddha there, and it%26#39;s quite big, about 12 metres tall and built in 1972. There%26#39;s a whole host of other statues in the temple grounds which are quite interesting, and an array of stalls and restaurants to cater for needs of the tourist who doesn%26#39;t have enough little Buddha statues or enough beady necklaces.

Bophut is quite a nice place if you%26#39;re a bit of a foodie, there are some nice restaurants there. I particularly liked Fifty Six, which did a 2 course meal for 430THB with a free Thai dance show. Happy Elephant was nice as usual. Tried Starfish and Coffee which has a good reputation apparently, and was always busy. But I found the service to be extremely quick, and the food wasn%26#39;t spectacular. I had a particularly memorable roast duck curry which contained 4 very small slices of duck, should have been called a duckling curry. The balcony area overlooking the beach was always popular, and I observed a group of American tourists refuse to sit anywhere else, instead choosing to come back in 30 mins to see if there was a balcony table free then. But you can%26#39;t really see the beach or sea when it%26#39;s night time......

Had an Indian curry from the Kohinoor, nice samosas, very average curry.

I was looking forward to visiting Coffee Junction, which I remember did some excellent breakfasts, like freshly made granola and yoghurt, smoked salmon, mexican omelettes etc, but sadly it had closed to be replaced by a shop selling sarongs, t-shirts and shorts. However a little cafe bar had opened opposite called Karma Sutra, and they had the same cutlery as Coffee Junction used to have, I wonder if they%26#39;re owned by the same person. This was a nice place for breakfast, or indeed for pre-dinner cocktails, they did a particularly nice mojito. Plenty of places to get a drink in Bophut, the Mosquito is a British run bar which has a decent happy hour until 8pm, cocktails at 120THB. The Emerald Irish Bar serves Guinness if you%26#39;re craving a pint of the black stuff. I witnessed a French man with hair like an American wrestler and his wife order a half of Kilkenny in here, then complained very loudly about it being too warm. Sounds perfect to me. Frog and Gecko served incredibly icy Singha. A new bar called Flair had opened, with a Thai women trio belting out western songs (';Like a virgin, touched for the 59th time';), so decided to wander in and check it out. The door staff entice you with a free shot of booze. Looked at the menu and nearly fell off my chair, 300THB for a cocktail, they%26#39;re cheaper in the UK! Had one drink then left, never to return. Bought a couple of pairs of good quality embroidered and lined board shorts in Bophut for 800THB, probably ripped off but was happy to pay it. The only downside to Bophut was the incredibly persistent Indian tailors who lurked outside their shop trying to entice you in. If they offer their hand and you shake it, you%26#39;re there for the rest of the day. I tried various tricks to elude them, when they asked ';Where are you from?'; I would reply ';I%26#39;m from Endor';, but this didn%26#39;t phase them and they would ask if I wanted to buy a suit. If they shouted ';Want to buy a nice shirt sir?'; I would look offended, point to my shirt and say ';I have a nice shirt';, then they would ask if I wanted to buy a suit. If anyone has a good method of dealing with these tailors, I%26#39;d be interested.

Next stop, Chaweng, so got a taxi and paid the usual 300THB. This time, no Manchester United talk, indeed the most miserable and sullen taxi driver I%26#39;ve ever come across. Didn%26#39;t even get out of the taxi to help get luggage out of the boot. Stayed in the Tango Beach Resort in north Chaweng. Chaweng is perhaps the most popular resort in Samui, a 7km stretch of powder white sand and clear emerald sea. It%26#39;s divided into North Chaweng, Central Chaweng and Chaweng Noi. The Tango is a small hotel on a narrow strip of land which stretches down to the beach. As we were shown to the room, I noticed that my next door neighbour was in fact the French guy with the unfortunate haircut from the Emerald Bar in Bophut - it%26#39;s a small world after all! A very pleasant 20 min walk along the beach, or a very hot and traffic filled 20 min walk down the road in you%26#39;re into the heart of Chaweng. North Chaweng is reasonably quiet, a few bars and restaurants on the beach, very chilled out, no thumping music. Then when you get to central Chaweng there%26#39;s a strip of beach bars with thumping music that are very nice, some great happy hours, cocktails for 100THB before 9pm, I particularly liked the Liquid Lounge. There doesn%26#39;t appear to be any direct beach access, so you need to cut through hotels, but when you%26#39;re on the mainstrip, that%26#39;s when it gets really busy, with a main road lined with shops, more shops, restaurants and the occasional bar. Then there are the side streets off the main road which are full of bars containing numerous Thai bar girls. Didn%26#39;t notice any Bar AND Massage places though. What struck me about Chaweng compared to the other places was the beach, beautiful powder white sand which clings to everything it touches, and a crystal clear emerald sea. In north Chaweng, there is a big sandbar so you can just walk about about 300 metres and the water is still incredibly warm and shallow. You can see why it%26#39;s so popular and built up.

Was walking along the beach one night on the way to Central Chaweng, and noticed in the distance a little row of flickering lights coming towards me. Then closer and closer still. Have you ever seen Close Encounters of the Third Kind, where the alien spaceships are just little rows of lights which suggest a shape? It was like that. I was all ready to start building models of tabletop mountain in the sand as the lights got brighter, then a couple of beach sellers selling laser pens and flashing deely-boppers walked past. I checked my watch and hadn%26#39;t lost any time.

Having become a bit ';riced out'; from all the Thai food, in Chaweng I indulged in a bit of western fare. Gringos Mexican Restaurant did an excellent (if large) chicken burrito all washed down with some frozen margarita. The Three Monkeys had a monkey-based menu, such as Monkey Under Blankets, which was chicken wrapped in bacon, very nice and again large portions. My favourite was an Italian restaurant called Firenze, which did the most delicious thin crust seafood pizza. The owner was a friendly Italian chap and the clientele also seemed to consist of Italians which was quite good. Bit strange to hear him talk to his guests in Italian and English, then shout orders in Thai to the staff there. Had the least favourite meal of my holiday in a beach restaurant called Relax Resort. The place was very busy, normally a good sign, so ordered some fish in a plum sauce. And waited. And waited. Fifty minutes later it turned up, a tiny bit of fish in a very watery plum sauce that didn%26#39;t taste like plum sauce. The toilets were also incredibly disgusting, lots of things overflowing. We just ate it, got the bill then went elsewhere for some dessert to make up for the poor meal. Walked back down the street towards the hotel and got hassled by yet more Indian tailors. I didn%26#39;t need a new shirt or suit.

Next stop, Bangkok. Got a taxi from the Tango to the airport at a cost of 200THB. The taxi driver cheerfully asked ';Where are you going?'; and I replied ';Bangkok, then back to England';. He thought for a while then said ';England, you like football? Manchester United? David Beckham?';. Five minutes later we were at the cute little airport, with it%26#39;s complimentary food and drink which I%26#39;ve never seen before at an airport - tea, coffee, juice, little cakes, just great. Fifty minutes and a cream cake later we arrived in Bangkok. Upon getting the luggage we were approached by various Thai women in business suits asking if we wanted a transfer into the city via the limo service. Instead we headed to the public taxi counter, told them where we were going, got a voucher, then into the taxi that boasted ';Meter Taxi'; on the roof and window. The taxi driver took the voucher and quickly wrote something on it. So we set off down the expressway towards the city. I looked to the drivers console to see how much the meter was so far, and couldn%26#39;t see a meter. There was a radio, CD player, and then a small pile of dirty flannels. Eventually, the taxi driver pulled out the voucher he%26#39;d written on, pushed it towards us and it said ';800THB';, he said ';You pay this';. I shook my head and said ';Meter';. He gestured around his car and shook his head saying ';No meter';. I insisted ';Meter'; and he looked confused saying ';No meter';. So I pointed to the voucher which had ';Meter taxi'; printed on the top, pointed to the large words saying ';Meter taxi'; on his back window, and said ';Meter';. He then removed the pile of dirty flannels and I%26#39;ll give you three guesses what was under there. He tried to laugh this off, but he%26#39;d completely screwed any chance of a tip. He then tried to get me to pay the 25THB toll for using the expressway and a 50THB surcharge as the car pulled up to the hotel. I just paid what was on the meter (400THB) and got out, by that stage the bell boy had taken my bags out of the taxi anyway. Not a very encouraging start to Bangkok. The hotel was the Pullman King Power, a large modern hotel next to the King Power Duty Free Mall. Don%26#39;t know who King Power is but he%26#39;s obviously rich. The nearest Sky Train to the hotel was Victory Monument, a 5 minute walk away, so headed there, quickly figured out how to buy tickets which usually involved getting lots of change from the ticket office, then headed on the beautifully air-conditioned trains down to Siam Square. First stop, MBK centre, a massive 7 storey mall containing thousands of shops and stalls, mostly fixed price but it was easy enough to get a discount. Then over the next couple of days, the Paragon Mall, Siam Discovery and Central World mall which had an excellent food court. Although Siam Square was a good location for shopping, for eating and drinking I found it less so and preferred the Sukhumvit area. As per usual, found about 3 ex-pat pubs within 2 mins of arriving in Sukhumvit, then decided to wander down a little side street to be confronted by lots of neon lights. ';Hello'; I thought ';Might get a nice drink or two down here';. So wandered down the neon street to notice lots of bars with very scantily dressed Thai women in cowboy hats, serving lots of western men. Interesting but not what we were looking for, headed elsewhere and discovered a little bar called Charlie%26#39;s Bar, next to which was an excellent Indian Restaurant called the Moghul Room.

After pounding the hard streets of Bangkok and every single shopping mall, it was time for a Thai foot massage, only 200THB for a 1 hour massage. Well, it was only 45 mins of foot massaging, followed by 15 minutes head and shoulder massage which was like having a Vulcan neck pinch done repeatedly. The masseur seemed disappointed she couldn%26#39;t pop my toe joints despite 2 attempts. I again tried my fledgling Thai language, asking how much I owed, and she looked surprised saying ';Oh, you speak Thai!'; then started gabbling away at me, which I didn%26#39;t understand a word of.

Fed up of shopping, decided to do something more cultural so headed down to the river for a boat up to Wat Pho. A river boat pass for the whole day was 120THB with unlimited travel until 7pm. Wat Pho is one of the biggest and oldest Wats in Bangkok and home of the famous reclining Buddha, 15 metres tall and 46 metres long with some lovely mother of pearl inlay on the feet. As I was stood marvelling at this inlay, I was asked to take a photo of a couple infront of the statue, so I kindly obliged and went back to foot gazing. Then another couple asked me for a photo, then another. I thought about charging 50THB for my services, there%26#39;s definately a niche in the market there for the enterpreneur. I found Bangkok to be very big and sprawling, and I seemed to spend most of my time travelling. I felt like I%26#39;d only scratched the surface and found it difficult to orientate myself. Don%26#39;t know if this was normal, or if it was the rubbish guidebook I had (Globetrotter Bangkok) which didn%26#39;t seem to represent the city at all. I left Bangkok feeling that I%26#39;d missed out on so much, but I%26#39;m not in a hurry to revisit.

The flight back was again on an A340-600 plane, which was unfortunately delayed by an hour due to a mechanical fault. Everyone at the departure gate was moaning, but I couldn%26#39;t understand why, surely it was better to fix the aircraft rather than attempt to fly in a faulty plane?

After 13 hours, the plane descended into the clouds of England and the whole world turned grey again. Waiting for the luggage at the luggage belt everyone was in a bad mood, pushing and shoving, losing all manners, the customs officials very rude and abrupt with people. I miss the Thai smile.

    Just Back Report - Maenam/Bophut/Chaweng/Bangkok

Hi, A great trip report, really enjoyed reading it, can%26#39;t wait till december when we are off back to Thailand again.Visiting Chiang mai, koh mak, koh chang and Bangkok. We went to Koh samui about 4 years ago, loved it, we stayed at cheweng noi, a lovely beach separated from the main cheweng beach by a headland.

    Just Back Report - Maenam/Bophut/Chaweng/Bangkok

Thank you noodle, made me laugh. I recognised so many places...Not the people though...The French Tourette and Pork joint lady! B

    Fantastic report noodleboy !

    55 days and counting .

If we have half the the great time you had we will be very happy .

    akmlg

Thankyou for your report HappyNoodleBoy, most enjoyable read. Yes you are right in saying that the Koh Samui airport is cute. The free drinks %26amp; food are also a nice touch. CJ

    Great report, enjoyed reading.

There is so much to Thailand and after a first visit it is well worth exploring more of the great places. Beaches, islands and inland areas.

    Great report,amusing and accurate.

One small point. What you describe as Bophut is Fisherman%26#39;s Village.

That was the BEST trip report I%26#39;ve read in a loooong time....very humorous. Thanks for the laugh.

    Cheers

    Jen

after reading your report i think Anthony Bourdain better watch out. totally agree with koh samui airport. and you help me to understand why the waitress offer to take a photo of me with pizza yes pizza at old papa in bali people always mistook me for japanes i am of thai descent.

Hi There Noodleboy - I LOVED your story - it was an amazing read. We also experienced the unseasonal weather last February when we were in Koh Samui - but even after 2 trips there, we still want to go back for more - we stayed at the southern end of Chaweng beach (Samui Paradise) and used to walk all the way up to the beach restaurants most nights - surprisingly, it did not seem to rain in the evening.

It sounds like you had a fantastic time. Thank you for taking so much of your time to write your fantastic report.

    Cheers,

    Sandy

    What a great read.

This may sound boring in comparison but the first time we went to Samui and because I arrange our holidays my hubby had no idea where he was going.

During our flight from Bangkok to Samui there was a huge storm which had us circling for over an hour. The plane felt like an elevator and people were being sick. My husband was green and sweaty, they almost diverted the plane to Phuket. When we finally landed it was a relief. Driving through the middle of Chaweng was a flood and we should have been in a boat.

But, after all that we landed in paradise and have been back numerous times since.

    Thanks for your story.

Cheap hotel near Walking St and Boyztown

Hi could anyone help me find an affordable and clean hotel near Walking St. (or Boyztown) around 400 Baht a night?

It%26#39;s my 1st time in Pattaya. I%26#39;ll be visiting pattaya at the end of March for 3 nights. I need a room with a private shower, and an AC if possible? All for 400 Baht-ish?

Cheap hotel near Walking St and Boyztown

Transportation is 10 baht by songthaew (baht bus) so even if you are not that close to your chosen haunt it is a cheap ride back to your hotel. Check this link out, Sawasdee Hotels. One of these hotels have some rooms that are around 400 baht.

Even with a walk in you should be able find a room pretty easy at the end of March. Maybe moving your target price up to 500 baht per night will help. There are fan only rooms that are cheaper.

Taxi from phuket airport to Rasada Pier ferry terminal

    hi

we are flying into phuket airport in may but are staying on phi phi so need to get a taxi to the ferry port.

does anyone know how much we should expect to pay? (can%26#39;t tell you the amount of times we%26#39;ve been ripped off by taxi drivers on arrival somewhere!)

any info would be greatly appreciated

    many thanks

    nathsal

Taxi from phuket airport to Rasada Pier ferry terminal

    Hi,

After big fights now, the airport allows taxi meter to stop out side of the airport.

Don%26#39;t stop inside of the airport for any limousine, taxi, mini van......

Go directly out and keep right, you will see the stand of taxi meter.

    have a nice trip

Taxi from phuket airport to Rasada Pier ferry terminal

    Hi.

Thanks for the tips florenceFlo-much appreciated.

    nathsal.

Outside of the airport in this case means: outside the terminal. The meter taxi%26#39;s are on the airport grounds, after you exit the terminal to your right.

    Hi stevni.

    Thanks for the advice.

Do you know a %26#39;ball park%26#39; price for the taxi by any chance?

    Thanks in advance.

    Regards.

    nathsal

By meter taxi, including airport charge, I would expect 450-600 Baht.

    Thanks again steveni!

    Paton Pearl Resortel

Has anyone stayed at the Paton Pearl Resortel

can you give us an idea if its ok We are 2 girls in our early 20s staying for about a week.

  • eye makeup
  • Is it safe at the moment?

2 girls travelling alone? What do you think? The UK foreign office website says no travel unless necessary so we%26#39;re not sure.

I would like to think Thai people are quite receptive of other races, we are black and not sure if there%26#39;s a lot of racism. I mean, we%26#39;ll probably stick out like sore thumbs, but that%26#39;s ok, as long as it%26#39;s safe etc

How is it in comparison to the UK?

Another thing, where should we stay / go.

    Tips please.

    shopping

    culture

    beach

    spas etc etc

Is it safe at the moment?

    HI

right at this moment the world is relatively safe

we did just get missed by an asteroid last week, only missed us by 45,000 miles and we still have this nasty global recessions but all and all Ok.

I would not put off any trips who knows when the next asteroid or whatever will hit. LOL

IMO Bangkok is safer than London.

Is it safe at the moment?

Black people really aren%26#39;t that rare in Bangkok. Although you will stand out, as do all tourists, how you are treated will depend mostly on how you present yourself.

Bangkok is shopping and eating. Besides the malls and restaurants, the streets are lined with vendors selling just about anything.

If you have limited time, Pattaya, Cha Am or Hua Hin might be a beach opportunity.

If you are staying a little while, heading to one of Thailand%26#39;s many islands would be enjoyable.

I hope you girls will have a good time.

Well as far as being Black, well there are so many other peopls from all over the world, you will just be another person visiring Thailand, lmao.

    Ed

Don%26#39;t worry, Thailand is far safer than probably most places in Europe.

Use common sense as you would when you travel anywhwere and you will have a great and rewarding time. Thailand is very cosmopolitan and welcomes visitors from all over the world. Relax and enjoy!

What time of year - there are different weather patterns. Pperhaps mix some North of Thailand and nature with relaxing beach, do some snorkeling.

    thank you so much

    Dont believe exaggerated travel warnings!

    Just come.

If you%26#39;re black you may get a few %26#39;interested%26#39; looks %26#39;off-the-beaten-track%26#39; but that%26#39;s more out of curiosity! Just the same for caucasians.

Have we run out of meds?

    Londongirl.

It%26#39;s safe as houses. Regardless of skin colour %26#39;Westerners%26#39; are still sometimes subject to inquisitive looks and questions.

Always be friendly and polite and you it will be returned in buckets, in true Thai style.

You will only find trouble if you seek it.

I just returned from Phuket and Bkk with my Irish Nigerian mate. He was referred to as %26#39;Mr Chocolate Man%26#39; by a young lady who focused her working day at night time. In context it was taking very much in jest and with a great deal of laughter...

After all I got the impression she was very keen to get to know this particular Chocolate man better....

safer than a night out in london anytime. there is a streak of racism that runs through thai society, but you will almost certainly be treated politely and with respect a visitors, and as farangs ( foreigners) will be assumed to be rich and in shops, bars etc worth looking after as you may spend well and tip well too.

i have a guide to bangkok and pattaya i can send you if you send me your email addres to me andypilling@hotmail.com or send me a message via this site

Great choice on walking street, i stay on the large room with seaview some years ago, lovely pool and really quiet on the day. Pther cjoice are all hotels on soi 14 The haven, Ma maison, Sandy Spring, Dynasty Inn.

Windy Inn Hotel _ Walking Street?

We stayed at Eurasia Residence Hotel Pattaya was good and polite service of everybody. Large and well, clean room, be have been nice if there had been table and chair on the balcony. Good swimming pool. Breakfast is not especially good, but that%26#39;s okay. Most of the committee on the menu could not be obtained because of the low season, we believe. Maybe we will come again. For walking street is just 5 minutes by walking.

    Honeymoon Planning ( Phuket )

    Hi WookieE,

We just spent 5 nights in Karon Beach Phuket in Jan 09 %26amp; there is so much to see %26amp; do.

I would suggest that you definately visit Phi Phi Island %26amp; would recommend using Simba Sea Trips for both this %26amp; James Bond. You have to book it before you go by email at simbaseatrips@gmail.com as you can%26#39;t book them through tour agents.Have a read of their reviews in the ';Things to Do'; section.

I%26#39;d also recommend Kok Chang Elephant Treking which is situated 5 mins from Kata %26amp; they do a free pick up as well, just give them a ring when you get there. You could also hire a driver for the day like we did to see all the sights in Phuket like the Big Buddah, Wat Chalong Temple %26amp; various lookouts %26amp; beaches. We used Mr. Sam, you can email him on siam_intouch@yahoo.com before you leave home as he does get quite busy. He also took us to Fantasea which is a good night out.

    Have a great honeymoon,

    Jacqui

    Acupunture

Hi...Im going to Porbandar in india this year and would like to know whether there are any acupuncturists and places for laser hair removal there. would really appreciate it if you could let me know. thanks

Is it worth it to book before I go?

    Hi all,

I will be in Thailand in November 2009. I fly into Bangkok on 4th and leave for Phuket on 12th. I would like to do a couple of tours in Bangkok and then check out Ayuthaya and then spend some time in Kanchanaburi but dont really want to keep travelling back to Bangkok to start the next tour.

What I would like to know is whether I should book all my tours from here or wait till i get there? How easy is it to find tours in Bangkok, Ayutthaya and Kanch? The tours I have looked at here are expensive and dont include everything I want to do but if I dont book, will I miss out on doing the things I want to do, that is included in these tours?

Would it be better to hire a tour guide there to just do the things that I want to do? Is it easy to find one?

    Please help!

  • Restaurant Seafood/Thai Suggestions

We will be in Bangkok for 3 nights early April and would like any suggestions on nice/clean restaurants. Will be staying at the Pathumwan Princess.

    Restaurant Seafood/Thai Suggestions

Try The Blue Elephant restaurant on Sathorn Road. You can get there on Skytrain. It is in a historical restored colonial building. The food was great and I%26#39;m sure they have lots of seafood selections.

    Restaurant Seafood/Thai Suggestions

You might try Amarin Foodhouse, located at the CHITLOM skytrain platform. Thai/chinese in a Western atmosphere.

Yok Yor Marina and Restaurant would be nice. Take the skytrain to ';SAHAN TAKSIN, then either tuk tuk to River City, or the River City shuttle ferry to River City. From River City, Yok Yok provides a ferry, from 5:30 PM.

If you brave up, and wish to try something more ';local';, take the skytrain to CHONG NONSI. Beneath the platform you will find Lek Seafood. Try it for dinner. They do great seafood at great prices. Never heard of anyone coming away ill!

If you like dim sum, on MBK Center%26#39;s 3rd floor, you%26#39;ll find Hong Min, towards the skytrain end of the center.

Secret Garden in Sathorn, right opposite Convent Road

Once Upon A Time in Petchaburi Road Soi 17

Banana on 6th floor of Central World, and basement of Silom Complex, Silom Road

See Fah - many branches including 6th floor Central World; and Soi Thaniya near the Saladaeng Skytrain station.

You might try Somboon seafood restaurant. It%26#39;s famous for fried curry crab. I%26#39;ve eaten here since I was a kid. It used to be the favorite restaurant for my family. The food style is combination of Thai- Chinese cuisine. Now soomboon has more branches. Personally I really like Deep fried sea bass with sweet fish sauce and stir fried prawns with garlic and chili. I think Somboon seafood at sam yan branch in Chamchuri Square Building is the newest and near by to your hotel. Proably 50 THB for taxi to reach there.

Or Bantadthong branch in Soi Chula 8 also nearby your hotel but it%26#39;s too complicate to get there i think.

You can check out on the menu and location at this link

    http://www.somboonseafood.com/e-index.html

    bon appetit

    :)

At Somboon, I have found the curry crab and the stir fried morning glory to be the only consistent dishes. Although still worth a visit for these, we have given the rest of the menu a pass.

If you head up to the 7th floor of MBK Center, where the cinemas are located, you%26#39;ll find all sorts of modern, ';clean'; eateries.

If you want to choose your food and select the prawns and fish then go to Seafood market in Sukhmvit Soi 24

7TH floor of MBK?? i thought the recommended food court was on the 6th floor?!! confused!!

Yes, the famous food court is the 6th floor.

But, on the 7th floor, there are ';nice/clean'; restaurants, possibly more comfortable for the original poster

princesssharon, that sounds great, how%26#39;s the pricing like?

    Shuttle service?

    Hey there,

Is there a shuttle or bus transfer from Trat Airport directly to Koh Chang, or at least to the ferry port?

    Cheers

    Nick

    Shuttle service?

Hi - the search facility on this forum is very good. A search for trat airport minibus will yield this: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g580110-i9814-k236鈥?/a>

    Shuttle service?

    Wow.

    That is incredible!

    Flights & Connections

    Hi all

I%26#39;m wanting to pick peoples brains if possible. We are flying in to bangkok on Eva Airways from LHR and are due to land at 15.05.

When we booked Thai Airways had a flight scheduled to leave for Krabi at around 18.50 and so we were going to book that flight. However it seems they have now moved it forward to 16.50.

I am obviously concerned this is a little short to allow for our connection. Our options now seem to be if we fly to Krabi.

    Thai Air Depart 16.50

    Air Asia Depart 17.05

I then wondered if flying to Phuket may be an option?

    Thai Air Deppart 18.20, 19.15, 22.40

    Air Asia 19.55, 21.20

    Bangkok Airways 17.30

Having flown with Eva several times before we have always been on time give or take 15 minutes, however I appreciate that may be 15 minutes we don%26#39;t have this time round.

What do people think? Having read the forums some people have said it%26#39;s approx 2 1/2 hours from Phuket to Ao Nang by taxi. Is this correct? Part of me thinks if it is then an extra 2 hours taxi drive may not be a too bad pay off to guarantee our connection.

Any views info greatly appreciated, thanks.

    John

    Generla info on Samui

I have seen quite a few questions regarding activities in Samui, so here are me personal favourites (I did them all last August!):

    - Rent a private sail boat for a full day, about 140 euros for the whole day (http://www.sailing-in-samui.com/) ask for Alex

    - Go on the half day Island safari with Mr. Ung (http://www.ungsafari.com). It includes elephant trekking, waterfall swimming, and much more. I think the full day one is too long.

    - Go on the full day speedboat trip to Koh Ang Thong Marine Park. We went with a company called Petcherat (http://www.samuispeedboat.com). It includes snorkelling, kayaking and trekking to emerald lake (amazing!). Ang Thong was the place that inspired the film 芦The Beach禄 and is paradise on earth!

    - Definitely rent a car (hertz at the airport is about 20 euros per day for a small jeep!!). It will give you the opportunity 鈥揳nd the motive- to drive around the beautiful island, as well as to go out at night (if you don鈥檛 stay at Chaweng). Chaweng is about a 10 minute drive from Bophut and a little less from Maenam. If you want to drive around the whole island it will take you about 90鈥?(total of about 60 kms).

    - Don鈥檛 miss out on Thai boxing. It takes place every 2 days at Chaweng stadium and is very good fun. It鈥檚 the Thai national sport and they take it very seriously.

In general, outside the hotels everything is dead cheap, and it is perfectly safe to eat anywhere. Shopping is also a joke; you will have a hard time spending money. You can get Thai trousers, t-shirts, handmade Thai silk scarves etc for less than 3 euros each!

Change money at the exchange bureaus all over Chaweng, NOT at the hotels, they will rip you off! Also, note that Samui is absolutely safe, there is a very low crime rate and this includes only pickpockets.

    Hope this is useful,

    Philip

    Generla info on Samui

    Hi Philip!

Yes!!!!! This is very helpfull! I am going to Samui in three weeks! Very excited and very curious about everything!

If you come up with some new things! Do not hesitate to post it!

    Greetz...

PS : I am still worried about the weather! What is your opinion about this?

    Generla info on Samui

    I wouldn%26#39;t worry too much!

The weather during the summer in Samui is much gentler there than the Phuket side.

We spent 10 days in Samui (Anantara hotel) in August last year. We got 1/2 hour of rain the day we arrived, and 1/2 hour the day we left!

Even when it rains, it%26#39;s paradise!

If you want, post your mail address and I will send you the info I had gathered before I went.

    Have fun,

    Philip

    rent a house

Hi looking to rent a 2 bedroom house on the island, have a 3 year old so access to a swimming pool would be great. Where are the best places on the island. Is there any schools / kindergartens I could put my daughter into.

Budget is up to 20000 per month.

    Thanks

  • Kanchaburi to Suvamabhumi Airport

Can anybody help with advice? We need to be at BKK airport at 1600 hours (for a 17.10 flight to Chang Mai. What%26#39;s the safest, most reliable and quickest option from Kanchanburi to airport? We are thinking coach, but don%26#39;t know where the coach depot is in relation to the airport and therefore how much time to allow to get from bus terminal to airport. I wait in anticipation.

    Kanchaburi to Suvamabhumi Airport

Well the fastest, most reliable option woukd be a taxi at about 1500 baht.

If you%26#39;re travelling fairly light, for something like 120 baht, you can get a van to either Victory Monument or Ratchadamnoen Road (near Democracy Monument/Khao San Road). From Victory Monument you can change to another van to the airport at a cost of 70 baht (30 minutes). That%26#39;s a painless way to get from K%26#39;buri to the airport for under 200 baht.

If you have more luggage, you can take an air conditioned bus which will have a luggage bay. Buses depart frequently for Bangkok%26#39;s Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Taling Chan) which has been moved way out in the sticks in northern Thonburi District. Cost is about 100 baht. From there, you can get a taxi to the airport. The metered fare plus tolls should come to around 400 baht, and the taxi should use the new Outer Ring Highway and reach the airport in 45 minutes or less. Don%26#39;t negotiate with the taxi drivers. Tell the driver your destination before you get in and insist on the meter. If he says ';no';, there are plenty of other taxis.

If you have more time and want to save money, take bus number 556 for 34 baht. It runs between the bus terminal and Suvarnabhumi. I don%26#39;t know how long it takes to make the run, but count on at least one hour.

Actually the nisa cabana was top of the clif but they have a very nice pool on the clif you can relax and enjoy your self along side the pool there are have the fushion food as well if you lke to go to the beach they said that they have a van to bring you to the nearly beach at the bangbao I got that twice for free doesn%26#39;t have any cost try that you will love it

Hi, I%26#39;m planning on travelling to patong alone in May, for six nights. I%26#39;m female and have never been to thailand before.. was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how safe it is to travel alone . Also if anyone knows some decent cheap accomodation near patong beach..

    Thanks

    girl travelling alone to patong

    hi,

the wife and I are there in may we are staying in ';Patong beach garden resort'; it%26#39;s right on the beach and was reasonabley priced.Don%26#39;t worry about it being safe as long as your sensable it%26#39;s safer in phuket than perth.what dates are you going?

    mike

    girl travelling alone to patong

Have you thought of spending time at Kata or Karon much less sleazy than Patong? You will have a lovely time I am off to Phuket next week for a week by myself its a very easy place but think you would be better staying elsewhere. Patong is pretty tacky, sleazy and touristy - not what Thailand beaches are best for. Have a lovely time.

    Hi mike,

I%26#39;m going from the 15th, I%26#39;m feeling a little more relaxed now it seems safe, Thankyou for your help :)

    Hi lots 66,

If i wanted to take day trips to karon or kata is it very far? Thanks for your help :)

It is pretty safe and Patong is not far from Kata/Karon....seriously though if you havent booked accommodation yet, look at staying at Kata/Kata Noi the beach is so much nicer.....will let you know once I get back.

    Looking for Luxury!

Currently staying in a studio condo at Jomtien.

We love it here but aren%26#39;t really fond of the beach here finding the deck type chairs a little uncomfortable on the old back and there is only a small but nice pool at the condo.

We would love to treat ourselves to a day out at a top hotel with lovely comfortable loungers and bigger pool, being waited on with Delicious cocktails.Preferably beach front.

We recently visted Koh Samui and visited Beach Republic on Lamai Beach which was our idea of heaven!

Or something similar to the famous Nikki Beach resorts but maybe not quite so pretentious( or expensive)

Does anyone know of such a venue in the Pattaya/Jomtien area? We don%26#39;t mind paying to enter for the day and for towels etc

    Looking for Luxury!

We Stayed at sigma Resort Jomtien Pattaya that was clean and modern the bedrooms were large and bright but the location is poor if you want nightlife as the hotel is situated at the far end of Jontiem beach and a long bus ride into town.

    Try to looking !!!

    Looking for Luxury!

Try the Royal Cliff group of hotels, or the ';Bird %26amp; Bees';, both between Jomt and Pattaya

Try Royal Cliff, just go up and have a look. There is Sheraton you can look at and compare locations / facilities.

Rabbit resort. They are so nice here, owner just came over and gave me a complementary custard pie. Divine!!!!

  • Koh Lanta in early June

We are planning a stay at the Layana Resort on Koh Lanta in early June. What will the weather be like. Bit worried because it is the monsoon season.

    Koh Lanta in early June

I am going mid May through early June, and you might get the odd day with rain for a few hours, but mainly from what I can see when it does rain it will be early morning or late evening for 30 mins or so.

My friend who lives on Lanta said last May it was hot hot hot and plenty of sun.

    Enjoy

Currently in Phuket ... Part III ... Signing off

    Hi all,

Well, my short 1 week holiday in Phuket is over :-( I am sitting in Delhi, going over the fantastic memories I had in Phuket. Just posting my pictures on Facebook.

Had japanese lunch at Fuji in Jungceylon. Good jap food, very extensive menu, good service ... and reasonable. I have had better jap food in Melbourne ... but, this is also good.

Am sun-tanned and feeling fit after all the healthy sea food I had in Phuket. I really enjoyed my holiday. Great fun.

So, all in all ... Phuket is a must-do holiday for beach lovers and foodies.

    cheers,

Off to Phuket (near Nai Harn/Rawai) tomorrow for a week and just wanted to find out what the weather is like? ALl those reporst of thunderstorms and rain are fairly depressing.

    Weather in Phuket

    Hi

No need to worry, it does not rain all day....in between the odd rain shower we are having hot sunny weather. Today off Karon Beach there are light on shore winds (not our usual north easterlies for this time of the year) which is great as it is cooling things down a bit. Still plenty of human lobsters on the beaches.

    Enjoy your holiday!

    Chantal

    Weather in Phuket

Thanks Chantal much appreciated. Can%26#39;t wait.....I know tropical rainstorms/showers rarely last long but the after the hideous winter we%26#39;ve been having, just crave heat and sun....

    Hi there Lots66,

Don%26#39;t worry about the temp in Phuket, the only time its cool is if you turn your aircon below 21C at night!

As Chantal said it does not rain all day and you will find its always warm to hot in Phuket so enjoy your holiday and don%26#39;t worry.

    Cheers, Pete.

    Hotel / villa help.

    Hi there,

I%26#39;m planning a trip to Ko Chang and was wondering if anyone knew of any hotels or villas that aren%26#39;t on the beach?? We were washed away in the tsunami in Khao Lak and although we%26#39;ve been back many times since we%26#39;ve never been to Ko Chang.

We can%26#39;t bring ourselves to have beach accomodation yet so any tips about resorts that are on higher ground would be really helpful

    Thanks in advance.

    Steve.

    Hotel / villa help.

There isnt much that%26#39;s away from the beach or well above sea level. Have a look at Top Resort on White Sand Beach - it%26#39;s on top of a cliff at the southern end of the beach, mid price place. For somewhere more upmarket the new Nisa Cabana Resort is the top of a much taller cliff at the south of Koh Chang - between Bailan and Bangbao. Great views bit not handy for walking to the beach.

If you want to be inland - Thai Garden Hill Resort is around 400 - 500 metres walk to the beach, above sea level, but not on particularly high ground.

    Hotel / villa help.

Island lodge in White Sands and Kerdmanee just next to Garden Hill. There are chances that it gets a bit noisy from the nearby entertainment complex.

However, there are no chances for a tsunami in the Gulf of Thailand.

Will be arriving in 2 days! Sunny all day??

  • Air Asia - do you need to confirm flight before flying?

    Hi there,

We arrive in BKK on 23rd March with Qatar and then have an Air Asia flight booked to go down to Krabi.

My e-ticket thing on the Air Asia website says ';Confirmed'; but I am not sure if we have to reconfirm that we will be flying within 72 hours of the actual flight.

    Can anyone advise please?

    Thanks :-)

Air Asia - do you need to confirm flight before flying?

It%26#39;s not a booking, it%26#39;s a purchase of ticket. The seat is yours no matter if you turn up or not. So no need confirmation.

Air Asia - do you need to confirm flight before flying?

probably best to confirm flight, not because of the purchase, but the flight , confirming there are no delays...

If there is a delay, they will usually send you a text message through the mobile you have registered at the point when you purchased your ticket or via e-mail.

    Thanks for info!

Will check the timings just before we leave the UK, hopefully the flight will still be at teh correct time!

    thanks again

    Phi Phi island inside help...

Hello I have been living now on Phi Phi for nearly four years, if you would like any help with anything or advise then feel free to ask..

    See you on the sunnyside....

    Phi Phi island inside help...

hi! coming to thailand in nov mainly to visit the islands..only starting to look at accomodation etc now! looking for somewhere cheap, backpacking on a budget, want to be close to beach, nightlife, amenities etc. heard bungalows on the beach are the best? any tips? clueless where to go! wats the best part of the island for 25 year olds? any info appreciated!

    Phi Phi island inside help...

Hi there, well Nov is high season and rooms can be hard to come by of just expensive.

I would suggest you book one night at least in advance, that way when you get here you can have a look around and maybe move to one of the guesthouses, at the moment you cant book online with this accomodation.

Check out www.phi-phi.com and maybe have a look at PP Casita, Cheap Charlies and Kinaree House. These are all pretty much on the centre of town and close to all of the restaurants and bars.

I would recomend staying in this area as its where most things happen, You can stay on LOng Beach but there is no nightlife there, you would have to catch a water taxi into town, or there is the other side of the island with the big resorts such as the Holiday inn and Phi Phi village, but again there is not much nightlife apart from restaurants and the customers here tend to be more couples.

Anyway, hope this helps, if you need anymore advise let me know.

    see you on the sunnyside

    Hi Tigerbar. :)

Can you advise me on %26#39;transfers%26#39;?

We fly into Krabi, and then need to get to Phi Phi Don.

I%26#39;ve sent a booking request to stay at PP Casita based on your recommendations in the forum- thanks!!

Should I pre-book my transfer to Phi Phi Don, or can I do that when I arrive? Also, do we take a ferry, or do we rent our own long boat or maybe a motor boat? I noticed on a hotel site, the trip is about 43 km.

    THANK YOU!

Hi there, you can book a taxi direct from the airport to the pier and buy your ferry ticket there, i dont think you can pre book, it takes about an hour and a half to two hours. You could go by speedboat but its very expensive.

    Hope you have fun..

I%26#39;m coming to Phi Phi in early October and staying at PPI Village and would like to know the best place to purchase alcohol at a reasonable price.

Hi, we are wanting to stay on phi phi island in january and getting confused with the hotel advice! We are a young married couple, looking for somewhere nice and relaxing (but not completely isolated!). We are not backpacking, so looking to spend around £60-80 GBP per night- please can you advise of any good hotels! Thanks very much

Hi there i would stay in the main area of the island, more access to the nightlife and numerous restaurants and you are still able to get away from it all.

As for hotels, well the Phi Phi View Point is very nice and about a 5/10mins walk into town, have a look at their website, if you do book though avoid the hillside fan rooms as they are quite old! if you can afford it the seaview villas are aazing, stunning views over Loh Dalam Bay, sunsets here are fantastic. Great pool and bar too.

    http://www.phiphiviewpoint.com/

Or maybe Casita Bungalows, in the same area as View Point Resort, great pool, bar and restaurant. Their a/c bungalows are lovely too.

Check out this local website it give you details on lots of different types of bungalows and rooms, if you need any extra help or advice on a hotel/bungalow, feel free.

    www.phi-phi.com

    Happy travels...

oh if you have a look at my profile i have some pics of Casita and ViewPoint.

see you on the sunny side

Hi Tigerbar... question about restaurants on Phi Phi.

We booked a bungalow at the Casita based on your recommendation- thanks!

What restaurants do you recommend for good thai food (noodles, curry, BBQ prawns, etc) in the area of PP Casita/Tonsai Village? Or even a short tuk-tuk away is OK.

Also, do any of the larger resorts have good restaurants that you like? (of course, they%26#39;d need to allow non-guests to eat there)

Thanks for your help!! I cant wait to eat and relax in Thailand (that%26#39;s the extent of my %26#39;plans%26#39;).

oh there are many, Casita itsellf has a great restaurant The Flamingo.. sorry but there are no tuk tuk on Phi Phi, there are no cars and no roads everything is in walking distance.

Your best bet is just to have a look around, you%26#39;ll find everything from italian, french, local market vendors, scandinavian or you can even learn and dine at the Thai cooking school - Pum%26#39;s restaurant.

    have fun

    Hi

I hope to travel to Thailand in November, I hope to travel to Phi Phi, Ko Phangan (for the full moon party) and another island. I would like to stay in star huts as it seems a good location. First time traveller to Phuket

I%26#39;m wanting to go to Phuket in July with my 15 yo daughter. a local travel agent said she went that time last year %26amp; the beach was closed.

Can anyone give me an idea if this is a bad time? (I have to go in my uni break). Or do we go to Bali?

Any ideas on mid range hotels? We don%26#39;t want to be too far from the action and don%26#39;t want to be dissapointed by a crappy hotel. We want a pool %26amp; a/c too.

I haven%26#39;t had a holiday in years so I don%26#39;t want it to be ruined by a bad hotel.

    thanks!

    First time traveller to Phuket

Weather differs year to year but July is in the low season and if seas are rough and undercurrents the red flags will be flown to warn of danger.

There are though at that time very cheap bargains in Phuket.

Does it have to be Phuket ? - In July weather on Koh Samui is better, not trying to deter you from Phuket but if weather is a concern appreciate that at that time of year Koh samui is quite good plus nearby islands and the mainland beaches and swimming should be no problem at all.

They also have lots of mid range places that are right on the beach itself.

Hotel rates though in Phuket in July would be cheaper than Koh Samui.

    First time traveller to Phuket

Chaweng is the busiest on Samui which is lively with shops, restaurants bars and nightlife but not like say Soi Bangla and central Patong if that is what you are after.

Hubby and I went last year in July and we did not have an issue with the weather. It did rain twice while we were there but on both occasions it only rained for a short time and it was still very hot.

Hey, can%26#39;t help you with hotel, but my philosophy for travel in low season is pick a good hotel with a good pool so if the beach is no good then you can at least enjoy the pool. Look at ban thai, holiday inn, patong merlin, burusari, seaview patong.

What are the best things you can do in Ao Nang

    Hi guys,

Have been to Thailand before but not to Ao Nang.

What are the best trips you can do in Ao Nang, as we are going for a 4 night stay. What sort of prices would we be looking at as well as I have a family of 5.

    Thanks for any help

    Adam

What are the best things you can do in Ao Nang

Very little. There really is no place to go. Nice beach area but, thats it.

What are the best things you can do in Ao Nang

    Well that wasn%26#39;t overly helpful..?

Adam, have a look at this web site. Of course you may find cheaper prices booking tours on the street as in Phuket. Many people recommend going on a 4 island tour to Poda etc, take a visit to the emerald pool or springs. Also have a read of Cathy%26#39;s trips to Krabi on her web page. Lee

    http://www.andamancampandcruise.com/

    www.cathyandgarystravelpages.com/krabi.htm

Yeah I thought it was a bit odd, especially reading that your going for 7 days. It is really only a beach?.

I thought it be a great base to go and get from, but thanks to previous answer makes me unsure.

    Adam

australia bunyip obviously hasnt been here.

there is LOADS to do in the area - fantastic local islands, diving, snorkelling, elephant treks, hiking, hot springs, mountain biking, local markets....i could go on and on...

you will love it, most people do....that have been here

    HI

like lost farang said there is tons of stuff to do there.';actualy the beach isn%26#39;t that good'; LOL

but you can take long tail boat to nearby islands for great beaches.

a must do if young and adventurious is to go Rock Climbing at Railay it is a world class mecca for climbers they have tours and class%26#39;s from half day to multi days.

IMO Ao Nang is much easier to get to Islands than Phuket.

We just come back from ao nang 2 weeks ago we stayed 9 days and still didnt fit everything in Bamboo island was my fav place also the 4 island tour great day out. Elephants /Water falls/ Jungle /hot spings Railey beach/Krabi town or just chill for a day . At the end of Ao nang beach to your left theres loads of monkeys they were great fun for half an hour you ll have a ball Has for hotels we stayed at Somkiet buri and we loved it like being in the jungle the rooms are really big with a lovlly balcony the breakfast was nice/ok we paid 2650 per night for 2 enjoy lui

I agree with sunset4us - the best thing we did in Ao Nang was our amazing trip with Elizabeth and Sun at www.andamancampandcruise.com

They are locals so they know all the best places to go.

They are more expensive than the trips you buy on the street because they are private and they customise each trip to suit their guests and give you freedom and flexibilty. But for us it was WELL worth the price.

Email Elizabeth for ideas - she%26#39;s very helpful.

    Hi,

We stayed in Ao Nang in January 09 for 5 nights %26amp; did heaps of things.

My favourite was the 4 island by speedboat tour which cost 1100 baht each for 1/2 day leaving at 9am arrived back at 3pm. Or if this is too expensive for the 5 of you hire a long tail boat for this trip, not quite sure how much but should work out cheaper for the 5 of you.

We also hired a driver for the day who took us to Emerald Pool, Hot Springs %26amp; Tiger Cave Temple.

You also have to visit Railay Beach which is only a 10 min longtail ride away, fantastic scenery %26amp; great for rock climbers.

Have a great holiday......you%26#39;ll LOVE the Krabi area.

    Thanks for great answers,

Hi Blondie59, it does becomes a problem when you have to pay for 5. I had a look at Bamboo Island thought great until you multiple by 5. A tour at 1100 baht becomes 5500 baht, over a couple of hundred dollars, (we are going Captain Mark in Phuket and that will set us back,) but looking forward to going and spend that money that K rudd is giving us.

    Regards

    Adam

Do all your tours with longtail boat. It is less that a half of what you will pay for the speed boat. It is not any better.
