I don%26#39;t know about regular text (it seems like there would be some roaming charges to pay for) but I can receive emails from my brother%26#39;s cell phone when I am in Thailand. His price to email me is the same as a text msg price. I read those emails at one of the many cheap internet shops in Pattaya.

I can also send emails to my brother%26#39;s cell phone too by using one of those cheap internet shops. Your friends would have to look into how this can be done from their cell phones.

Anyway, in Pattaya you can find internet shops that only charge 20 or 30 baht per hour for you to use their computer. If you have your own computer you can use it for free at McDonalds restaurants.

I was in Pattaya last month and was unable to use my regular mobile for fone calls but was able to send and receive texts. Vodafone told me it is because a lower frequency is used for texts ? People from U.K. who text me just used my mobile number without any prefix and I was able to receive the texts. Obviously I dont know if this will work on every network.

Hi i agree wih Flago, i text Thailand on my Orange phone and get charged 12p per text, when in Thailand i use Thai sim and use prefix 0844 or 0944 and get calls to UK for 5 baht a minute, But remember if you get calls from UK to UK phone no. in Thailand YOU pay for call @ £1.50 to £3.00 a minutedepending on network.

You are not clear on which way you intend to text.

but....

assuming you have a thai SIm - if you want to text UK from thailand, use the ';+'; sign NOT 007 008, 009 in front of your country code - (UK = 44).

So your number will look + 44 Drop UK ';0';+ town code(e.g. 1792) + private number.

for cheap CALLS from your mobile to UK use )007, 008 or 009 in front of ';44';
